Launched in 2001, the .NAME extension is the single TLD planned for personal web pages only. These domain names can be personal or fictitious names, nicknames and/or other designations people are popular by. At the beginning, only 3rd-level registrations were allowed, so if you wanted to reserve john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already purchased third-level names remained running.
